Beowulf, a great Geatish hero, sails across the sea to help King Hrothgar in the time of need. He heard about the Danish King having trouble with a monster, Grendel, who keeps attacking his men. Grendel is a powerful demon who keeps successfully attacking and killing Hrothgar’s men at night with nobody to stop him. King Hrothgar accepts Beowulf’s offer to help and is very grateful for the ending of Grendel’s violent attacks.
One night, when Grendel attacks Heorot again, Beowulf is waiting for him. In order to keep the fight fair, Beowulf fights Grendel without a weapon. Beowulf fights Grendel and tore off his arm in the process, making the demon run away seriously injured. King Hrothgar then thanks Beowulf with expensive gifts and a big feast. The same night, Grendel’s mother comes to get revenge for her son by attacking the hall and taking Grendel’s arm back to her lair. When Beowulf finds out about the attack, he tracts her down and kills her in her cave. He uses a sword he finds there and she uses a dagger. When Beowulf was finished attacking Grendel's mother, he found Grendel on the floor nearly dead. He finishes off Grendel and takes his head back to King Hrothgar along with the hilt of the sword that killed Grendel’s mother. Before Beowulf returns to Geatland with his warriors, King Hrothgar gives Beowulf more gifts and another big feast.
Back at home, Beowulf is crowned king of the Geats and leads his people for 50 long and successful years. When Beowulf is an old man, a dragon attacks the innocent Geatish people and burns down houses because a thief stole a valuable piece of treasure. Beowulf and his men track the dragon down even knowing this would be his last battle he would fight. With the help of his follower, Wiglaf, after all of his most powerful soldiers ran away scared, Beowulf defeats the dragon. In the end, he dies from a serious injury, but first wishes for Wiglaf to get some treasure for him to see. When Beowulf finally sees the treasure, he gives Wiglaf his golden necklace and dies. As Beowulf wished, his body was burned in a funeral pyre back on his home land and buried with the valuable treasures.
